FOP Lieutenants' Exam Prep Class
Final Session - Saturday, November 1, 2014
The Fraternal Order of Police will hold the final Lieutenant's Exam Prep Class on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Lakeview Presbyterian Church meeting hall, located at 5914 Canal Blvd. - one block lake bound from the I-610 / Canal Blvd exit.

Retired NOPD Captain Louie Dabdoub and NOPD Lieutenant Julie Lea will lead the final training session, which will include a practice in-basket exercise, a review of previous lessons, and final test-taking advice.

The FOP has learned the actual Lieutenant's Examination will be held on a Saturday, in "early or mid-November".  Our best guess is the test will take place on November 8th or 15th.

We have also learned the test will be a combination of an in-basket exercise (which will include one writing requirement) and video scenarios.  For both in-basket and video scenario components, the candidates' responses will be audio taped, but the candidate WILL NOT be video taped.

We have delayed the final class because of conflicts with our meeting space.  We would urge candidates to use this time between classes to continue to practice scenario responses.  Work in pairs or groups.  Utilize your smartphone or a recording device to learn your vocal faults.

We would urge candidates to review the 2009 Lieutenant's Test Study Guide, contained on the thumb drives provided by the FOP.  This study guide was developed by the Civil Service staff prior to the 2009 Lieutenant's test.  While the 2014 test will not be an exact replica, we expect many similarities.  The 2009 Study Guide includes a sample in-basket exercise.

Remember Captain Dabdoub's method for video scenario response:

PROBLEM - what is (are) the problem(s)?
CAUSE - what is (are) the underlying cause(s)?
DECISIONS - what needs to be done?
Planning - this is my plan, and why?
Organization - This is how I will implement my plan?
Leadership - How can I resolve the big problem?
FOLLOW-UP - Never assume the problem is totally fixed.
MONITOR - Make sure that the problem doesn't reoccur.
RELATED - Is this related to other problems I'm facing.

Remember - The next class  will be held on Saturday, November 1st.
