Lt. Darrell Basco of the Louisiana State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police last night presented state Rep. Joe Lopinto with the Legislator of the Year Award at the Crescent City Lodge No. 2 meeting; the state FOP selected Lopinto for the award last summer, but he was unable to attend the annual meeting.
Lopinto, a second-term Republican from Metairie, chairs the House Committee on Criminal Justice.
"Rep. Lopinto was selected for this award based not only on his commitment to justice and responsible legislation, but for his consistent concern for the welfare and safety of law enforcement personnel," said Basco, of the Pineville Police Department and president of the State Lodge.
Lopinto is an attorney and a former deputy sheriff.
"I'm honored and humbled to receive this award from the FOP, not only as a former law enforcement colleague but as a legislator and as a citizen who deeply appreciates their work," Lopinto said. "I look forward to continuing my service to the law enforcement community and to all the people of Louisiana in the next Legislative Session."
